A Simplified Sustainable Guide to Dressing for Pride

It’s officially Pride Month, baddies (thank GOD). This means all that rainbow attire you have been carefully hiding in your closet now rightfully has the spotlight. Pride Month is your time for rejoicing. This is YOUR month to walk between the subway trains blasting Chappel Roan from your JBL flip. But as susty baddies, we must remind you that you can slay all day in clothes that are not made of plastic…we can smell rayon when we see it. Never fear, this pride month is about to be sexy and susty. Let’s talk about how to style with pride and love for our planet.

Shop GAY

Everyone wants to be a walking pride flag all month long (or at least for your city's big celebration). But it's more sustainable and more ethical to show your girlypop energy all year round by investing in queer businesses. Maybe people won’t know immediately that you are fruity af, but you’re far more likely to have a cute 5’1” masc in a trucker hat stop you on the street to ask for your number if you’re strutting in a sick fit than if you’re sweating in a Shein graphic tee.

DIY!

Bestie, we know you’ve been dreaming of a lesbian flag dress for the dyke march, but please, for the love of God, stop looking for it on Amazon and do it yourself! Put your susty hat on, get the girls and gays together, and start building your dream Pride outfit. Here are some ideas that we adore and you can easily replicate:

Patchwork Top

Hot To Go Bedazzling

Gay socks!!!

Pride Nails

DIY Pride Bracelets (These are cringe but we trust you to make them your own.)

Accessorize (Including Fun Makeup!!)

If you don’t want to add new garments to your overflowing closet, focus on accessories and makeup this season. Chappell Roan’s signature cowboy hat is an obvious token of our queerness, and there are other ways to celebrate batting for the other (only) team. Dress like YOU

You don’t have to illustrate what letter of LGBTQIA+ you are (it's always evolving anyway) by the colors you wear. So, just wear what YOU want and think beyond the rainbow.

I am wearing my bright pink parade undies, adidas pants I thrifted off my roommate, and this weird rainbow filtered shirt I got at Beacon’s, with my trusty orange sunglasses I got at a vintage store in Philly.

Dress in what makes you feel good, and when you show up to the parade, the march, or the all-night dance party, you’re guaranteed a better time. And having a good time as our whole selves is what Pride Month is all about. Don’t buy something you’ll only be able to wear for one Saturday during the one month when the rest of the heteronormative world has to STFU. The most sustainable garments we can buy are ones we will wear for a lifetime.
